Is Your Skin Ready For Treatment?

Other Types of Acne Scars

There are more severe acne scars that are formed, usually called “ice pick” scars, divots, or craters because of its shallow and jagged, or deep stabs on the skin. This is the result of deep tissue loss from nodular acne. It is best to consult a skin specialist at the first sign of this kind of acne to minimize scarring.
Atrophic Macules
They are soft, wrinkled scars that can sometimes turn blue due to the blood vessels such as capillaries or veins lying directly beneath the scar.
Follicular Macular Atrophy
Commonly seen at the chest and back area, they are white small soft lesions, smaller that whiteheads, found beneath the surface layer of the skin.
Depressed Fibrotic Scars
These are the larger scars, sharp and steep in appearance. Most ice pick scars can turn into this type of scar in a period of time.
Soft Scars
They are often round or in a line and small in size. They have edges that seem to roll or slope, looking like they are merging with the normal skin surrounding it.
For deep and severe cases of scarring, especially when there is loss of tissue, most over-the-counter and topical skin medications and products have no or little impact in the disappearance and smoothening of those scars. It would be best to consult a skin specialist or dermatologist on what to do and what option or procedure is still open for you. This includes dermabrasion, laser treatments, and collagen injections. Although it is quite discouraging to have severe scarring, following a personalized and effective skin care regimen can improve the quality of your skin, prevent you from having future acne breakouts, and give you smoother, clearer, and cleaner skin.

STOP PICKING! EASIER SAID THAN DONE.

It is quite fulfilling to be able to successfully squeeze out the particles in a blackhead, white head, or pimple. However, it can also cause further injury and infection to the skin, which leads to scars, especially when not done right. Having regular facials can help prevent buildup and formation of pimples. Dermatologists and aestheticians are trained and licensed to do extractions properly that they should be the only ones touching your skin.

LARGE PORES. CAN I GET RID OF THEM?

Having large pores is not a result of acne scars or of pimple popping. They are inherited from your parents and cannot be narrowed or closed. Since oil and dirt can widen the pores, regular cleansing, scrubbing, and treatments with masks that are clay-based can tighten it up a bit, make it smaller and prevent it from being clogged, thus smoother and clearer skin.

CAN BLACKHEADS CAUSE SCARS?

When oil and dead skin cells combine with sebum, it plugs up the follicles or pores. As it is exposed to the air, it oxidizes and discolors, making it look black. Blackheads will not cause scars when left alone. But when it is squeezed and poked at, then it can cause scarring. Therefore, to prevent scarring from blackheads is to refrain from damaging the skin.

CAUSES

Bacne or back acne and chest acne are basically acne that occurs at the back and chest area. Therefore, they are also caused by the same things causing acne: hormones and stress. However, there are additional causes of bacne and chest acne such as the clothes worn and daily physical activities. Since the chest and back area are full of sebaceous glands, they are prone to having clogged pores. Paired with profuse perspiration and tight clothes, it can easily result in bacne and chest acne. Clothes made of synthetic materials like Polyester and Lycra can trap sweat and combines it with the oil at the surface of the skin, resulting in a pore-clogging film that creates whiteheads and cystic lesions.

PREVENTION

 Follow a strict regimen for skin care. Use products specifically meant to prevent back and chest acne.
 Do not use a body scrub that contains grains as this may further aggravate the irritated skin.

  Be aware of what you wear especially when engaged in heavy physical activities. Use clothes made of natural fibers to help the skin breathe. An example of this are clothes made out of cotton that are lightweight and soft to the skin.
  Always take a shower after working out or doing heavy physical activity to help prevent breakouts brought about profuse sweating.

ACNE SCARS AND DISCOLORATIONS THAT CAN BE TREATED

An acne scar is not the flat reddish or brownish spot that is left after a pimple is healed. This is actually a macule, which is actually not a scar but more of a discoloration of the skin that fades away after months. Exposure to the sun can further aggravate this condition, slowing down its fading. At the Mario Badescu Skin Care center, there is a wide range of products that have been designed to prevent as well as reduce this discoloration faster.

HOW DOES AN ACNE SCAR OCCUR?

Scars are like the remnants, a remembrance that an injury has occurred on that certain spot or tissue. As with acne, as the white blood cells and other inflammatory cells work to flush out the bacteria at the site of acne, it succeeds in healing the damaged tissue. However, if the damage to the tissue is great, then they might not be able to put it back together to what it was before, such as in the case of nodular acne. With nodular acne, the infection is deeper, more severe that tissue loss is inevitable, thus the formation of a scar.

ACNE SCARRING - CAN I GET RID OF ACNE SCARS?

After dealing with the stigma of having acne, you are still faced with another issue, the scars, the blemish, the discoloration and pitting caused by acne. Fortunately, there is still ways to get rid of acne scars. Learn more on what to do, what can’t work, and a whole lot of advice on scar prevention.

It is essential to comprehend that the treatment for acne and acne scars are two different things. Products meant to heal acne are not usually the products meant to treat its scars. There are also products that are designed to prevent scars from forming.

Back Acne (Bacne) and Chest Acne

Have you found yourself loving a dress and knowing it can never be yours? Or find yourself embarrassed to take off your shirt while playing the hoops with the guys? Back acne or bacne and chest acne is controlling your life, dictating what you can wear and your comfort when with friends.

Teen Acne

Has your acne made you cancel plans you have made a long time ago just because you felt self conscious about it? Do you find yourself avoiding eye contact with people because you are afraid that they will see your acne? Teen Acne can make you feel lost and all alone. But the truth is that every person goes through this phase in their lives. As they go through puberty, pimples are a part of it regardless of size, shape, color, nationality, or ethnic background. In fact, 90% of all teenagers experience acne.

Causes of Teen Acne

When a teenager hits puberty, the body starts to churn out hormones, substances responsible for the many physical changes seen of teenagers at this time. In boys, the androgen testosterone is produced in huge amounts that they grow quickly faster, making their bones heavier and denser, broadening the shoulders and chest area, deepening their voice, and growing facial hair. In girls, androgens are needed for estrogen production, which is their main hormone in pubertal development. They experience monthly menses and even mood swings. Sometimes, there is an overproduction of androgen in girls, and it shows through an excess in hair growth on the upper lip and chin. This may be a cause of alarm for teenage girls. Fortunately, procedures such as waxing or threading, as well as facial creams designed to remove hair is easily available. These hormones are also the culprit for the acne that these teenage boys and girls develop during this time. Excess hormones can trigger the sebaceous or oil glands to produce sebum or oil. Normally, the oil produced by these sebaceous glands gets released into the surface of the skin. An excess of this oil can combine with dead skin cells, plugging up the pore, trapping bacteria and oil, and causing swelling and inflammation. This forms the acne. When the body detects something wrong in this area of the skin, it also sends to it white blood cells, which when they get trapped in a pore, forms whiteheads.
Aside from hormones, other causes of teen acne may include some food allergies, nutritional imbalance, and even improper care for the skin. Genetics and heredity may also play a role in the development of acne. If your parents, either one of them, suffered from teen acne, then most probably, you will do so too.

Prevention

You have the ability to control what your skin looks like. Here are some tips that can help clear your skin of acne and prevents further appearance.
  Avoid picking on the acne. There are bacteria on your fingers that are also responsible for your acne breakout. Squeezing it just traps the oil and bacteria further, causing it to become more inflamed. The more inflamed it becomes, the more it leads to acne scarring.
  Use the proper regimen for your skin to avoid drying up your skin and further breakouts. Gentle and mild lotions and cleansers are best for any skin, since harsh products may even trigger oil production, resulting in more pimples and even dry skin.
  Avoid going to bed with your make-up still on. Remove it using a gentle cleanser to clean the pores and prevent future acne breakouts.
  Rinse your make-up applicator brushes at least once every week to rid them of bacteria and oil.
  Choose a concealer with Salicylic acid so that as you cover those blemishes, it will also disinfect it.
  Laundry your pillowcases regularly to help prevent an acne breakout. They are usually carriers of germs and bacteria that can cause acne formation.
  For every face washing, pat the skin dry using a clean face towel. Avoid rubbing the skin to prevent further irritation and breakouts.
  After being out in the sun or any sports activity that causes heavy perspiration, always remember to shower afterwards to wash off the bacteria and dirt that have gathered in the pores.
  Keep the face clear. Bangs, long hair, and even the use of bandannas or hats may cause teen acne as it traps perspiration and dirt on the skin.

WEEK 5
Q: Who introduced you to products by Mario Badescu? Why did you make the decision to use it?
A: While staying over at my aunt’s house, I found the seaweed night cream in her medicine cabinet. I had the most awful and painful acne breakout in my life. When I saw it was for acne-prone skin, I thought, what have I to lose? I tried all moisturizing creams that I can get my hands on and not one works. So when I tried it, it was the first time that I truly felt relieved of the pain, and made my skin clearer and glowing. I checked out your website and found out that you had a skin care specialist visiting not far from where my parents were staying. I asked for an appointment, went to it, and what happened after, is history.

Q: Describe what your skin looked like before you used these products.
A: I had acne all over my cheek area.

Q: What is the type of your skin?
A: Usually, I have normal skin, with combination skin at times

Q: What type of acne regimen was recommended? Please describe it.
A: I was given the cucumber cleansing lotion, seaweed face wash, seaweed night cream, rose water spritz, flower and tonic face mask, drying cream, and buffering lotion. She also recommended that I use mineral make-up for my olive skin tone.

Q: How fast did you notice positive results?
A: During the first week of use.

Q: What happened to the acne? Are the results to your satisfaction?
A: The acne on my cheeks are completely gone, from about 50 pimples to just 1 or even none. My skin got clearer and smoother, better that it was before my acne breakout, with a very noticeable glow.

Q: What other products for skin care have you tried to clear up your acne?
A: Whatever product I can find over the counter, I have tried: Clean and Clear, Clearasil, Cetaphil, Clinique, Neutrogena, Proactive, and even herbal remedies. I even tried Bella Clear which just worsened my skin.

Q: Have you ever consulted a dermatologist? What did he/she prescribe for you? Was it effective?
A: I consulted a dermatologist as requested by my endocrinologist who believed that it was my hormonal imbalance that is responsible for my acne breakouts. She inquired on how I was able to get my skin to clear up and so I mentioned your products. She then gave me a prescription for Duac topical cream to use together with my MB regimen to prevent recurrence of my acne as well as Tazorac to help clear up the scars I have inadvertently caused through popping my pimples.  I have been using Mario Badescu products from August 2008, and the prescribed medications from April 2009. Overall, they have helped me clear up my skin and scars.

Q: What websites did you check to know more on acne and its treatment?
A: I used a basic google search for sites on acne, its natural remedies, Proactive, and Bella Clear.

Q: How much was spent on other acne medications, if ever?
A: Around $500 until I used Mario Badescu products.

Q: Are these products by Mario Badescu Skin Care affordable, as compared to other products on skin care?
A: It is very much affordable and worth every cent paid. Over-the-counter products may cost cheaper but do not work so you lose money as you keep on buying these products. Believe me, I have tried every product there is until I used Mario Badescu products. They not only reach 3 to 6 months of use, they are truly effective, making my skin smoother and clearer than I ever thought possible. I am a student, stretching every penny to survive each day. I have used Mario Badescu products and I not only have great skin but even a lot of savings.

Common Acne Treatment Mistakes

Acne is a problem encountered by most people in a part in their lives, and they still have to live with the fact that there is still no cure for it. In searching for the proper treatment of acne, many facts and fiction have surfaced. Because of the many acne treatment practices, it is important to know what the real thing is through reliable sources.

Tanning

Though the rays of the sun may seem to improve irritated skin, it has been found out that acne treatments make the skin more sensitive to the UV rays of the sun, thus needing a sunscreen with high SPF to protect it. The formation of red or brown spots from acne will be more difficult to control and remove. Exposure to the sun is not a reliable treatment for acne, and it will even harm the body and skin.

Pimple Popping

When acne is popped using dirty fingers, improper techniques, and done under dirty conditions, this will just further aggravate the skin and even cause permanent scarring. It is only a qualified doctor or dermatologist or aesthetician who is able to clear acne for you.  Apply a warm compress on the irritated skin, especially when the pimple is painful and swollen, then take an anti-inflammatory medication to help alleviate the pain until professional treatment is obtained.

Scrubbing

Although periodic exfoliation is recommended to keep the pores clean and clear, avoid exfoliating on irritated or acne-filled skin as this can burst open small pimples and scatter the bacteria all over the face, thus creating more pimples on the skin. It can also make the oil glands go haywire, producing more oil on the skin and causing more irritation on the sensitive skin.

Excessive face washing

Even if you wash your face every hour, you can still develop acne as this can actually stimulate the oil glands further to produce more oil, thus clogging the pores and developing more pimples, plus having dry, irritated skin due to the harsh cleansers. Wash your face at least once daily, using mild cleansers designed for your skin type, which will get rid of excess oil that may cause acne formation and leave it clean, clear, and smooth.

Refrain from eating chocolate and fried foods

A popular myth about acne is that you can develop acne if you eat chocolate and foods that are fried. However, scientific studies have not seen any connection between acne and these types of food except for the fact that these are not healthy for the body, therefore the skin. It would be best to frequently eat food rich in vitamins and minerals which have antioxidants to protect your skin, such as fruits and vegetables. Lessen your intake of fatty foods and even dairy products as these may trigger excessive oil production. The rule of thumb is that whatever is good for the body is definitely good for the skin.

Cleansing with very hot water

The use of hot water for cleansing your skin can cause delicate capillaries to break under the skin, creating a reddish, blotchy appearance. It can also over-stimulate the oil glands. It is often best to use tepid water for a thorough rinsing.

No need to moisturize

All types of skin needs to be hydrated, especially when undergoing treatment for acne since acne medications such as Accutane and Retin A can dry up the skin. For acne-prone skin or skin with active acne lesions, a moisturizer that is oil-free is best to avoid clogging the pores such as hydrating gels. A moisturizer suited for the day, with sunscreen is also great to protect it from the aging and hyperpigmentation effects of the sun.

Handling Periodic Acne Breakouts in Oily Zones
There will be times when parts of the face will become too oily, specifically the chin and forehead, from hyperactive sebaceous glands. This can result in the formation of small pimples in the affected area which are not cystic acne nor whiteheads.

To get rid of the small pimples that occur sporadically on oily areas of the skin, this drying cream will gently disinfect and scrub the area free from pimples without harming the skin.

Acne Skin Care Regimen for Dry Skin

A lot of over-the-counter skin cleansers and acne prescription medications have been seen to aggravate dry skin since they are often meant for teenage skin or oily skin. The goal of our dry skin acne regimen is to treat the acne and clean the skin without stripping it of its much needed moisture. We usually recommend using mild cleansers and cream-based hydrating masks. Acne treatments are milder. Gentle exfoliating scrubs are also encouraged to keep the skin smooth and hydrated, as long as the skin is free from any active acne.
Is this your skin type? Print out your personalized checklist to guide you in your own skin care regimen.
